If you asked me seven years ago, I would have said, “I’m not a dog person!”
So how do you go from not being a dog person to wanting to spend your days working with dogs as well as living with two dogs during a pandemic 24/7? Oh, and raising nine Cockapoos. Please hang in there. All will be revealed!
As a wee girl, I grew up with loads of cats and random animals from the Castle Eden Dean Nature Reserve. My Stepdad was the Head Warden there. He was always rescuing animals and bringing them home for rehabilitation. Sometimes it would be an abandoned kitten that we would rehome, and if we couldn’t, then we would end up keeping them. At one point, we had five cats, two hedgehogs, a red squirrel (in the days when we had them), a rabbit and a pregnant giant Emperor Moth with a broken wing (we saved the caterpillars).
I was one lucky girl to have grown up in a house of richness for all creatures. By rich, I mean in love, definitely not money, but that’s a different story for another day.
Fast forward to University days. I don’t want to go on too much 😉 Most students would take hmm… a TV, Laptop, Food, beer!! Etc… My luxury item was a Marine fish tank bought second-hand. My Mam and I had hours of enjoyment watching the eco-system evolve and mature over time. My little Sisters luxury item for Uni was a Horse! Definitely a story for another time!
After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Industrial Design, I began the journey of my life. I worked for BBC in Glasgow, 1TV as an Art Director in KUBUL (Yes in Afghanistan!!), SKY Sports London as a Set Designer if you’re a fan of football you might have seen some of my work. Champions League and Premier League sets are a few of them, and through all these excellent jobs, I always missed the connection to the outside and wildlife. See, I’m a country girl at heart… I have always been creative but give me a day of walking with dogs or gardening, and I shine with happiness (well, apart from being muddy, but that’s part of the fun too).
Whilst working at SKY Sports, I met the first love of my life, my Wife. At the same time, my Mam got Kodi, a Miniature poodle, and this was my first experience of a dog I connected with and loved. See before Kodi, my Mam always had Chihuahuas. From that point, I knew I was a dog person but not a Chihuahua person!!
A few years later, before the second love of my life was born, our Son, my Wife, persuaded me to get a dog. I really wanted a Poodle but was aware of their sensitive nature, and thanks to my Mams advice, we got our first Cockapoo, Frankie. The perfect mix of the family dog and intelligence.
Well, Frankie! At the start, we had our challenges as she is a very high energy Cockapoo. Thanks to Frankie and her sensitive and challenging personality at times, I realised I had to learn a lot and very quickly. She’s an amazing dog, and I love her to bits. She took me on a journey into Dog Training, Dog Behaviour, K9 Communication and Nutrition. “Yes”, It’s been hard work!! And definitely worth it!! This resulted in the development of my MENSA Program. I’ll never be without a Cockapoo in my life again.
Three years later, Frankie had a litter of 9 very healthy and happy F1B Cockapoo Pups. With very little sleep and lots of madness, this was one of the best experiences of my life. I even used the MENSA Program on the pups. Making sure every pup had all the fulfilment and indoor life experience before leaving for their forever families. All the pups could sit and wait for their food at six weeks. I gave the little ones a “Puppy Cockapoo Adventure” every day. This was when I knew what makes me happy in life, being around Cockapoos, pups and giving happiness to other Cockapoo’s Families. The idea of the Cockapoo Adventure Club was born.

After an adventure, it’s always nice to have a chat and then a cuddle with my two Cockapoos. They deserve it!! They work hard and play hard. Now time for a relaxing evening… well at least for the dogs. I have a toddler at home ready for his entertainment to start…
I think I’m definitely a dog person now!! Those Cockapoos have a way of getting into your heart quickly. Even after only a few hours of sleep a day, they just make everything ok… I know another little one who has that effect on me!
If you were to ask my friends or anyone that knows me. What my main topic of conversation is, I’m sure they would say “Cockapoos, Dogs and how to entertain a toddler”. These are some of the courses I have completed. If I’m not doing studies, I’ll have a dog book in my hand in my free time.
